Looking Back: A Retrospective on January
Building the Foundation for Simple Luxury
If we had to describe January in one word, it would be Velocity.
When we set out to make 2026 the year of "Simple Luxury," we knew it wouldn't just be about new scents and pretty jars. It had to be about the soul of the company—how we make things, how we manage our footprint, and how we show up for our community.
This month, while the world was settling into New Year’s resolutions, we were performing "open-heart surgery" on Sugar Skull. Here is a look at what we’ve been up to behind the scenes.
1. Going International: Sugar Skull in Mexico 🇲🇽
In perhaps our most significant expansion to date, January marked the official opening of Sugar Skull in Mexico. This is our first international market, and it feels deeply poetic to bring our brand to the place that inspires so much of our aesthetic and "Simple Luxury" ethos. We are thrilled to begin this global chapter and can’t wait to see how our neighbors embrace the Sugar Skull experience.
2. Launching the Sugar Skull Collectors Society
A luxury brand is nothing without its community. This month, we officially launched the Sugar Skull Collectors Society. This is our inner circle—a place for those who want first-access to our most ambitious projects. Seeing our first group of founding members join this month has been a powerful reminder of why we focus on craft over mass-production.
3. New Heights in Craft: The Decadent Collection & Non Quartem
We didn't let the administrative work slow down our creativity. We launched the Decadent Collection—five scents that represent the absolute pinnacle of our fragrance development.
We also released Non Quartem, a limited-edition tribute to the lawless spirit of the high seas. With only 25 pieces produced, each hand-numbered, this release was designed specifically for our Collectors who value rarity and meticulous detail.
4. Refocusing Our Footprint
Strategic growth sometimes means knowing when to step back. This month, we made the decision to close two of our underperforming Painted Tree locations. By streamlining our physical presence, we are freeing up the resources and energy needed to focus on our new international markets, our digital experience, and the quality of the products you bring into your homes.
5. Strengthening the "Brain" of the Business
For the data nerds among us (guilty!), we’ve spent hundreds of hours implementing new MRP, Accounting, and Inventory management systems. Why does this matter? Because moving into international markets like Mexico requires precision. These systems ensure we can maintain world-class quality and stock, no matter where in the world a Sugar Skull candle is being lit.
6. Expanding Our Horizons
January was a month of "firsts":
-
Wholesale & Art Markets: We stepped onto the professional wholesale stage and participated in our first-ever Art Market in the DFW area.
-
The Press: We shared the Sugar Skull story through our first two official press releases, signaling our transition from a local boutique brand to an international player.
7. Looking Ahead: The Sanctuary
Finally, we’ve been quietly preparing the Sanctuary Collection. While it’s already available for our wholesale partners, the retail launch is just two weeks away (February 12th). It’s a collection designed for a reset—perfect for finding your center after a month as busy as this one.
A Final Thought
January wasn't about the "loud" wins or easy sales. It was about the quiet, heavy lifting that makes a global brand possible. From the streets of Mexico to our new digital systems, we are building something built to last.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
